Chairmen Green, Guest Issue Statement on Latest Month of Low Border Encounters: ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill’ Will Ensure the Border Remains Secure
June 17, 2025
WASHINGTON, D.C.–– Today, House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Mark E. Green, MD (R-TN) and Subcommittee on Border Security and Enforcement Chairman Michael Guest (R-MS) released the following joint statement after U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released data revealing 12,452 Southwest border encounters in May, a 93% drop compared to May 2024. In addition, there were 29,502 nationwide border encounters last month, a nearly 88% decrease compared to last year. Apprehensions by the U.S. Border Patrol between ports of entry along the Southwest border totaled 8,725.
“It is no surprise that the Trump administration’s enforcement of our nation’s laws continues to show the world, especially would-be border crossers, that we mean business. Restoring sovereignty at our borders has led to a night-and-day contrast with the chaos of the historic Biden-Harris border crisis. While congressional Democrats fight to keep gang members and public safety threats in our communities on the taxpayers’ dime, House Republicans have advanced, and continue to fight for, the resources that will ensure CBP and ICE’s frontline personnel can keep our borders and communities secure for years to come. It is now the Senate’s responsibility to pass the ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill’ so we can deliver on our promises to the American people.”
