MEDIA ADVISORY: Chairman Green Announces DHS Budget Hearing with Secretary Kristi Noem
May 7, 2025
WASHINGTON, D.C. –– Today, House Committee Homeland Security Chairman Mark E. Green, MD (R-TN) announced a hearing for next Wednesday, May 14, to examine the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Department of Homeland Security (DHS) budget, featuring testimony from DHS Secretary Kristi Noem:
“When Secretary Noem took office, she inherited the chaos left by President Biden, Vice President Harris, and her predecessor, Secretary Mayorkas. Nowhere was that more apparent than at our borders. In just the first 100 days of the Trump administration, Americans have witnessed a complete reversal of the historic public safety, national security, and humanitarian crisis at our borders––all because the Trump administration has untied the hands of frontline law enforcement and is allowing them to do the jobs they were hired to do. It turns out we didn’t need new laws; we just needed leaders who enforced the ones already on the books.
“In order to continue this victory at our borders for years to come, this Committee advanced recommendations last week that would not only help Secretary Noem bolster CBP, enhance technology at our borders, and complete the border wall system, but also help prepare the communities who will host the World Cup and the Olympics in the coming years. To help accomplish these vital objectives, the Trump administration has put forward a bold vision to both fund DHS and refocus it back to its core mission––from CISA’s work to protect critical infrastructure and FEMA’s disaster preparedness mandate to the counterterrorism efforts across the department. I look forward to hearing from Secretary Noem on how the Trump administration plans to position all components of DHS to succeed after years of chaos and confusion caused by an absentee commander-in-chief.”

BACKGROUND:
Last week, the House Committee on Homeland Security advanced budget reconciliation recommendations, pursuant to H.Con.Res.14, to fund President Trump’s border security efforts for years to come. From completing the border barrier system and increasing U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) personnel, to enhancing technology at our borders and upgrading CBP facilities––Homeland Republicans are working to defend our sovereign borders and ensure our Border Patrol agents and CBP officers can continue accomplishing their vital missions.
These recommendations also include homeland security grant funding for preparations for the FIFA World Cup in 2026 and the Summer Olympics in 2028. To conduct oversight of these and additional upcoming international events, Chairman Green and Vice Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) announced the establishment of the “Task Force on Enhancing Security for Special Events in the United States.” Members of the bipartisan task force, who will be announced in the coming days, plan to visit select event sites in advance, hold hearings, host roundtables, and release a final report on their findings as part of the Committee’s oversight of National Special Security Events (NSSEs) and major Special Event Assessment Rating (SEAR) events.

- USBP averaged the lowest daily nationwide apprehensions in history at approximately 264 per day in March—94% lower than the daily average in March 2024 (4,488).
