WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Rep. Dale Strong (R-AL), chairman of the Subcommittee on Emergency Management and Technology, and Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) led a bipartisan congressional delegation to New Orleans, Louisiana, to visit the site of the deadly ISIS-inspired terrorist attack on New Year’s Day and locations for upcoming Super Bowl LIX events.
First, members met with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem while visiting the Bourbon Street site to receive a briefing from law enforcement. Members then assessed security preparations and joint efforts by all levels of law enforcement to prepare for and maintain the security and safety of the public during the National Football League’s (NFL) upcoming Super Bowl LIX events. Reps. Julie Johnson (D–TX) and Nellie Pou (D-NJ) were also in attendance.
“On New Year’s Day, our nation faced a heinous reminder that the threat from homegrown violent extremism is still present on U.S. soil,” Chairman Strong said. “The House Committee on Homeland Security continues to conduct rigorous oversight of the investigation into the Bourbon Street attack, and visiting the tragic scene today has reinforced the urgency of our efforts. In the wake of threats to the area, I was grateful for the opportunity to examine the work of our dedicated federal, state, and local law enforcement partners as they coordinate with the NFL to protect Super Bowl LIX spectators and the public.”

Members honored the 14 innocent lives lost at the site of the January 1, 2025, terrorist attack on Bourbon Street, and spoke to officials from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the New Orleans Police Department about their work to secure the homeland in the wake of an act of terrorism.

Members visited the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center to receive a tour and briefing from officials from the NFL, HSI, and the Louisiana State Police on their security preparations for Super Bowl LIX events.

Members visited Caesars Superdome for a tour and briefing in coordination with officials from the NFL, HSI, and the FBI.

Members concluded the visit with a briefing from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) as they work to safeguard the traveling public ahead of Super Bowl Sunday.
