MEDIA ADVISORY: Higgins, Pfluger Announce Joint Subcommittee Hearing on Human Cost of Biden and Mayorkas’ Border Crisis

July 20, 2023

Committee to begin phase three of investigation into Secretary Mayorkas’ failure to secure the Southwest border

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border Security and Enforcement Chairman Clay Higgins (R-LA) and Subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Law Enforcement, and Intelligence Chairman August Pfluger (R-TX) announced a hearing next Wednesday, July 26, at 2:00 PM ET to examine the tragic human cost of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and President Biden’s historic humanitarian border crisis. This hearing will launch the third phase of the House Committee on Homeland Security’s full-scale oversight investigation into Secretary Mayorkas’ dereliction of duty and the Biden administration’s failure to secure our borders.

“The egregious failures of Secretary Mayorkas and President Biden at our Southwest border have brought generational trauma upon our country, and the cost of this crisis has been paid with human lives. As this Committee has already established, cartels with zero regard for human life have seized operational control of the border. With this new power, they have taken a record number of lives with deadly fentanyl, abandoned countless numbers of trafficked women and children in devastating conditions, and perpetrated violence against law enforcement and landowners on the frontlines of the crisis,” Chairman Higgins said. “The disintegration of our nation’s sovereignty at our Southern border is unacceptable. Next week, Homeland Republicans will continue demanding answers on this DHS Secretary’s dereliction of duty and his failure to protect the American people.”

“The Biden administration’s failure to secure our borders is not only unacceptable but also deeply disheartening, as it results in deadly consequences for countless Americans, including individuals in my home state of Texas like the Tambunga family, who lost a beloved grandmother and daughter to a human smuggler earlier this year,” Chairman Pfluger said. “Secretary Mayorkas’ dereliction of duty puts our homeland security in jeopardy and reveals a concerning lack of urgency in addressing one of the worst border crises in our nation’s history.”
