Ranking Member Katko Statement of Support for Rep. Miller-Meeks

WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. John Katko (R-NY), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, issued the following statement on Democrats’ attempts to unseat Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA), fellow member of the Homeland Security Committee.

“On November 30th, 2020 Iowa’s bipartisan State Canvassing Board voted unanimously to declare now-Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks the winner of Iowa’s second congressional district. This came only after every legal vote was counted and then recounted by bipartisan recount boards in all 24 counties within the district. In every count, Rep. Miller-Meeks led in votes and was certified the winner. Instead of challenging the decision of the Board in Iowa state court, her opponent skipped over this step and filed a contest with the House of Representatives. I strongly urge all my colleagues to dismiss this contest and stand with the voters of Iowa’s second district. To do anything less would disenfranchise all voters in the district. Elections for House districts are decided by the people and should not be overturned by the opposing political party who happens to hold the majority in Congress.

“As the Ranking Member on the House Committee on Homeland Security, I applaud my colleague, Rep. Miller-Meeks, for her work on the Committee and on behalf of her constituents. While Democrats spend time and resources trying to find the votes to steal her seat, she keeps her head down and works hard on our nation’s emergency and disaster preparedness, and I am proud to serve with her.”
