WASHINGTON D.C. — Today, House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Andrew Garbarino (R-NY) and Ranking Member Bennie Thompson (D-MS) issued the following statements in recognition of the 235th anniversary of the United States Coast Guard (USCG):
“For 235 years, the United States Coast Guard has remained ‘Always Ready,’ playing a critical role in protecting our homeland and maintaining a strategic American presence across the globe. We owe a debt of gratitude for the dedicated and often dangerous work of these brave men and women––from interdicting deadly drugs before they reach our shores to saving lives in floodwaters in Texas,” Chairman Garbarino said. “The Coast Guard stands as the first line of defense against transnational criminal organizations at our doorstep and heightened grey-zone aggression from adversaries abroad, and the House Homeland Security Committee will keep fighting to ensure the service is prepared to meet the moment and succeed in its mission.”
“For 235 years, the United States Coast Guard has protected our shores, saved lives, and safeguarded the homeland. From disaster response to maritime security, their service reflects the very best of our nation,” Ranking Member Thompson said.“Committee Democrats are proud to honor the Coast Guard’s dedication and will continue working to ensure they have the resources and support needed to meet the challenges ahead.”

Background:
Last month, Committee member Rep. Tony Gonzales (R TX) introduced a resolution honoring U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer Scott Ruskan for saving 165 lives during the recent devastating floods in Texas.
As the Coast Guard increasingly operates in contested environments like the Persian Gulf and South China Sea in joint operations with the Department of Defense (DOD), Committee members sent a letter last month to Acting U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Kevin E. Lunday to ensure the service is prepared to combat the growing threats posed by drone warfare.
Last Congress, the House Committee on Homeland Security conducted oversight to ensure the success of the Coast Guard’s Polar Security Program, enhance the service’s coordination with DOD and other federal agencies, and maintain cyber resilience.
