MEDIA ADVISORY: Subcommittee Chairman Gimenez Announces Hearing on the Federal Air Marshals and Their Mission
September 17, 2024
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security Chairman Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) announced a hearing for September 24, 2024, at 10:00 AM ET, to examine the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) Federal Air Marshals (FAMS) operations and the future of the law enforcement agency’s mission. The Federal Air Marshals, one of TSA’s security layers, mitigates threats from travelers who present an elevated risk to aviation security by deploying undercover air marshals to provide an in-flight security presence.
“Federal Air Marshals are tasked with a critical homeland security mission throughout our country, but their role has expanded far beyond our skies in the two decades after September 11th,”Subcommittee Chairman Gimenez said. “Last year, a roadmap laid out a future for the law enforcement agency, yet numerous challenges––from the Southwest border crisis and a stretched-thin workforce to the expanded use of domestic threat intelligence programs––have created a need to reexamine the Federal Air Marshal mission. Congress must ensure the flying public is protected and taxpayer dollars are used efficiently amid an evolving threat environment.”
