MEDIA ADVISORY: Chairman Garbarino Announces Subcommittee Hearing on Operational Technology Protection Amid Increased Threats
February 3, 2024
WASHINGTON, D.C. — This week, Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-NY), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee’s Subcommittee on Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection, announced a hearing on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at 10:00 AM ET to address threats to operational technology (OT) across sectors, including the water sector, and to discuss the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) role in securing OT.
“Critical infrastructure supports the everyday lives of all Americans. This is why the recent cyberattacks against U.S. water treatment facilities by Iranian-affiliated actors is not only an alarming trend—it’s a potent message by our adversaries on their ability to exploit vulnerabilities in highly specialized technology,” Chairman Garbarino said. “CISA should provide a framework for better collective risk management and collaborate with OT owners and operators to build security into their operating environments. Most importantly, CISA must lead by example by modeling cyber hygiene for all sectors, as the cascading impacts of cyber threats are rarely ever isolated to just one. I look forward to hearing from our industry witnesses about the importance of cross-sector partnerships and ways our nation’s risk advisor can enhance collaboration with Sector Risk Management Agencies and external stakeholders amid these increasing threats.”
