MEDIA ADVISORY: Pfluger Announces Subcommittee Hearing to Address Transnational Repression on U.S. Soil
January 12, 2024
WASHINGTON, D.C. — This week, the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Law Enforcement, and Intelligence, led by Chairman August Pfluger (R-TX), announced a hearing Wednesday, January 17, 2023, at 2:00 PM ET to examine the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) role in combating transnational repression in the United States. Transnational repression, as defined by the FBI, is when foreign governments stalk, intimidate, or assault people in the United States. On October 25, 2023, the Committee held a hearing on the malign influence of the Iranian regime and its nefarious activities on U.S. soil. On December 11, 2023, Chairman Green and Chairman Pfluger requested a classified staff-level briefing from DHS and the FBI on ongoing transnational repression threats.
“Brazen intimidation by nation states or their proxies on U.S. soil is a clear threat to our homeland security and cannot be ignored by this administration,”Chairman Pfluger said. “I am increasingly alarmed by this type of growing malign influence by foreign governments to silence and harass dissident voices within the United States. One of my own constituents is a victim of these intimidation tactics. From the Chinese Communist Party’s clandestine police station in New York City to the Iranian Regime’s plots against journalists and former U.S. officials, this hearing is a crucial opportunity to examine how DHS can effectively combat this escalating threat to our nation’s democratic norms and sovereignty.”
