MEDIA ADVISORY: Subcommittee Chairman Garbarino Announces Hearing on Biden Administration’s Artificial Intelligence Executive Order
December 5, 2023
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection Chairman Andrew Garbarino (R-NY) announced a hearing on December 12, at 10:00 AM ET, to examine the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) responsibilities related to the Biden administration’s new Executive Order (EO) on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), through DHS’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA):
“As AI becomes more prevalent in our society, homeland security must be our nation’s top priority when deploying it. AI has the potential to revolutionize sectors and act as a powerful tool in collective cyber defense, but it is crucial that this innovative technology is used responsibly and appropriately secured,” Chairman Garbarino said. “DHS must play a key role in ensuring the safe usage of AI nationwide, and the federal government must work hand in hand with the private sector and other agencies to integrate AI security into an existing framework rather than expanding burdensome bureaucracy. I look forward to examining ways Congress can conduct oversight of the administration’s implementation of this EO, especially concerning its ambitious timelines, and ensure CISA is successfully leading the way in AI security as our nation’s risk advisor.”
