WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Homeland Security Subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Law Enforcement, and Intelligence Chairman August Pfluger (R-TX) announced a hearing next Wednesday, September 27, at 10:00 AM ET to examine terrorism threats in Africa and their implications on U.S. homeland security.

“As an F-22 pilot who wore our nation’s uniform in the fight against ISIS in the Middle East, I have witnessed with my own eyes the horrific and brutal reality of these terrorist organizations. Now, as al-Qaeda and Islamic State-related terrorists expand their deadly network across Africa, the U.S. must maintain intelligence gathering capabilities with allies to identify and assess evolving threats to the homeland emanating from the region,” Chairman Pfluger said. “Decreased U.S. visibility and the increased political instability in the Sahel region have created the perfect vacuum for the growth of Russia’s paramilitary involvement on the continent. We must examine Russia’s anti-Western influence in Africa and address how the compounding effects could empower terrorist networks that seek to conduct attacks on U.S. soil. I look forward to hearing the testimony of national security experts on this issue as we seek to better understand the evolving threat of terrorism more than two decades after 9/11.”
