Homeland Republicans’ Second Interim Report on Cartel Control of SW Border in the News
September 12, 2023
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Last week, the House Committee on Homeland Security Majority, led by Chairman Mark E. Green, MD (R-TN), released its interim report on the second phase of the Committee’s comprehensive oversight investigation into the Biden administration’s handling of the crisis at the Southwest border. This report examines how President Biden and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ reckless open-border policies have allowed cartels in Mexico to seize unprecedented control at the Southwest border to smuggle deadly fentanyl and record numbers of illegal aliens—including criminals, gang members, and potential national security threats—into the United States. Read the full second interim report here.
The release of this report comes after the Committee released a 112-page report covering its findings in phase one of the investigation, which specifically examined Mayorkas’ dereliction of duty as evidenced by his handling of the crisis at the Southwest border. In that foundational report, the Committee established that Secretary Mayorkas appears to have ignored or abused at least eight laws passed by Congress, likely ignored four court rulings and orders, and may have lied at least two dozen times to Congress. HERE’S WHAT THEY ARE SAYING:
WATCH: Chairman Green on Newsmax’s American Agenda
“We just finished and published the report from phase two, which was about cartel crime. Essentially, cartels are taking advantage of these policies and the tons of people that are coming, millions of people. They overwhelm the crossing sites, and then they bring the drugs and smuggle the humans that they don’t necessarily want us to know about around those crossing sites. So that’s been the modus operandi. Actually, Merrick Garland talked about it and then Alejandro Mayorkas said he knew nothing about it. So it’s a huge dereliction of duty on Mayorkas’ part.”
Fox News via Adam Shaw: House Homeland Security GOP report accuses Mayorkas of ceding border control to cartels
“Chairman Mark Green launched an investigation into Mayorkas’ conduct and handling of the southern border crisis earlier this year as the DHS chief faced a barrage of criticism from Republicans over the border crisis that has seen record encounters at the border, where encounters currently remain high. The report on phase two of its investigation is called ‘DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has emboldened cartels, criminals and America’s enemies.’ In the report, the majority concluded that ‘Mayorkas and [President] Biden’s policies have emboldened and enriched the cartels, ceded control of America’s sovereign Southwest border to these organizations, and jeopardized the safety and security of individuals and communities across this country in the process.’”
Daily Caller via Jennie Taer: House Committee Says Mayorkas ‘Enriched The Cartels’ After Second Phase Of Republican-Led Investigation
“The House Homeland Security Committee released the findings of the second part of their probe Thursday into Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, finding he ‘enriched the cartels,’ according to a copy of the report obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation. Under Mayorkas’ leadership as DHS secretary, cartels have gained more control over the southern border and smuggled more individuals and contraband across it, according to the report. The first phase of House Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green’s probe focused on Mayorkas’ alleged ‘dereliction’ of his duty as secretary of DHS. Cartel smuggling of illegal migrants has become a billion-dollar industry as illegal immigration has surged, The New York Times reported in 2022. Border Patrol recorded a record of more than 2.2 million illegal migrant encounters along the southern border in fiscal year 2022, according to federal data.”
Washington Examiner via Reese Gorman: Mayorkas has ’emboldened cartels,’ new report from GOP-led Homeland Security panel finds
“[The report] details that as a result of Mayorkas and President Joe Biden’s border policies, the cartels have seized control of portions of the southwest border and are more emboldened than before. ‘It is, therefore, this Committee’s conclusion that Mayorkas and Biden’s policies have emboldened and enriched the cartels, ceded control of America’s sovereign Southwest border to these organizations, and jeopardized the safety and security of individuals and communities across this country in the process,’ the report says. Through conversations with border securityand law enforcement professionals, the committee found that the number of illegal immigrants and drugs moving across the southwest border daily shows the control the cartels have of that area.”
Epoch Times via Jackson Richman: GOP House Committee Report Accuses Mayorkas of Emboldening Cartels at Border
“The GOP-controlled House Homeland Security Committee released a report on Sept. 7 accusing Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of having ‘emboldened cartels, criminals and America’s enemies.’ In a 62-page report, the committee went in-depth on the problems at the southern border and pinpointed them on Mr. Mayorkas. The report accuses Mr. Mayorkas of allowing for the cartels to seize the southern border. The committee blames the Biden administration undoing the Trump administration’s strict border policies in addition to enacting its own policies, leading to millions of illegal immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. ‘The massive increase in the number of people now traveling up through Mexico on their way to the Southwest border represents a historic business opportunity for the cartels, as each person is someone off whom they can profit,’ states the report.”
