Katko on China Using the Olympics to Obfuscate Their True Intentions

WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. John Katko (R-NY), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, issued the following statement on the 2022 Winter Olympics empowering China to further its march towards an authoritarian state acting with impunity on the global stage:

“A year ago, I was one of the first to call for a boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, because of the Chinese Communist Party’s blatant human rights abuses, acts of genocide, and the distinct threats the CCP poses to our Homeland Security. This Olympics is clearly being used as a tool of state power. The fact that Xi and Putin shared a box appears to be overt evidence of this. We must continue to focus on the malign action of the CCP around the world, and the tenuous position western democracies find themselves in when we ignore those actions. We can’t let these games pass and allow the CCP to whitewash who they are. We must focus on holding them accountable.”
