“Startling Stats 6.0” Show No Signs of Border Crisis Slowing Down

WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. John Katko (R-NY), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, released the latest edition of the “Startling Stats” fact sheet, detailing new data on the crisis at the southwest border.

Key Facts:

• CBP encountered 178,622 individuals at the southwest border in April 2021, the highest number in a single month in over 20 years, and a 944% increase compared to April 2020.

• Since January 2021, CBP has encountered 531,533 individuals along the southwest border. During the same time frame in 2020, CBP encountered 124,838 individuals.

• Heroin seizures increased 97% from March 2021 and fentanyl seizures increased 34%. In FY21 so far, fentanyl seizures have already surpassed those from all of FY20, with 6,494 pounds through April 2021 compared to 4,776 pounds for all of FY20.

• In FY21 to date, CBP has arrested 5,861 individuals with criminal convictions – more than double the number arrested in all of FY20.
