MEDIA ADVISORY: Chairman Gimenez Announces Hearing to Assess Whether US Travel System Can Meet the Moment Ahead of High-Profile International Events

April 2, 2025

WASHINGTON D.C. –– Today, Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL), chairman of the Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security, announced a hearing for Tuesday, April 8, 2025, to examine public and private sector efforts to secure and improve the U.S. travel system ahead of high-profile international events such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics.

“As we approach major global events such as the FIFA World Cup, the Los Angeles Olympics, and the United States’ 250th anniversary, we must take proactive steps to ensure the safety of our communities and visitors,” Chairman Gimenez said. “It is imperative that the Department of Homeland Security modernize and enhance our security measures, including screening technology, infrastructure, and operational processes. As Mayor of Miami-Dade County, I worked to attract and retain major events like the Super Bowl, Formula 1 Racing, and Art Basel by guaranteeing the safety and wellbeing of all attending. I look forward to engaging with industry leaders to assess the progress made and to identify further improvements. Now is the time to strengthen our travel security systems to ensure they are as thorough and effective as possible.”
