Chairman Green on June Border Numbers: “Another Month, Another Devastating Number of Inadmissible Aliens Entering and Being Released”

July 15, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Mark E. Green, MD (R-TN) released the following statement after the release of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) border encounter numbers for June 2024:

“Another month, another devastating number of inadmissible aliens entering and being released into the United States—all at the invitation of President Biden and now-impeached DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Their strategy should now be plain to everyone: flood the country with as many illegal aliens as possible between ports of entry, and then create unlawful mass-parole programs like CBP One and CHNV to encourage otherwise-inadmissible aliens to still enter—just in a less politically embarrassing and damaging way. That’s why monthly encounters at official ports of entry of individuals with no lawful basis for entering our country have exploded under this administration, from just under 20,000 in January 2021 to more than 117,000 this past June.

“Meanwhile, the national security, public safety, and fiscal consequences continue to worsen across our country, and will continue to be felt as long as Biden and Mayorkas release aliens with no robust vetting into our communities, regardless of how they arrive. If Biden and Mayorkas want to take credit for the numerous devastating headlines about illegal alien crime and the floods of people coming across our borders in the last month alone, they are welcome to do so.”

Background:

According to CBP data, total nationwide encounters were 205,019. Southwest border encounters exceeded 130,000 in June, including more than 83,000 apprehensions by Border Patrol agents between ports of entry. Northern border apprehensions between ports of entry totaled 3,600, more than quadruple the 844 apprehensions in June 2023, and the most since President Biden took office.

Since January 2023, appointments scheduled through the CBP One app have skyrocketed to more than 680,500, while in the same timeframe almost 495,000 inadmissible aliens have now arrived and been released into the United States via the CHNV mass-parole program. Via just these two unlawful mass-parole programs alone, Biden and Mayorkas have released more than 1.17 million inadmissible aliens into the United States. Given that a recent report from the DHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) indicates that the administration has no plan in place to ensure the removal of Afghans paroled into the country in 2021 once their parole period ends, Americans should have no confidence any such plan exists to remove inadmissible aliens allowed into the country via these illegitimate programs, either.
