MEDIA ADVISORY: Chairmen Higgins, Bishop Announce Joint Subcommittee Hearing on Border Security Technology

July 3, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border Security and Enforcement Chairman Clay Higgins (R-LA) and Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability Chairman Dan Bishop (R-NC) announced a joint subcommittee hearing for Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at 2:00 PM ET, to examine the potential for emerging technology to enhance border security and learn about industry efforts to develop technology for the border security mission.

As the men and women on the frontlines bear the weight of the worst border crisis in American history and as technology on both sides of the border evolves, it is vital the U.S. government makes strategic investments to advance border security technology, Subcommittee Chairman Higgins said. “It is incumbent upon us to learn more about the emerging capabilities and technologies and how they can be implemented at the border to help detect and mitigate threats to our nation’s sovereignty and public safety.

Implementing emerging technologies is a key part of the modern border security mission,” Subcommittee Chairman Bishop said. It is imperative that DHS combat the growing technological threats from our adversaries at our land, sea, air, and maritime borders—whether they be from drones or artificial intelligence—and that Congress ensure development and acquisition are done effectively and efficiently. I look forward to hearing from our witnesses on how these new technologies can enhance the border security mission and how best to incorporate them into the field.
