“It’s Time to Impeach”: House Republicans Voice Support for Impeachment of DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

February 1, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. — This week, the House Committee on Homeland Security, led by Chairman Mark E. Green, MD (R-TN), voted to report articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the House with a favorable recommendation. This historic vote was required because of Secretary Mayorkas’ willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law and his breach of the public trust. These impeachable offenses were well-documented in the Committee’s nearly year-long investigation into the causes, costs, and consequences of the unprecedented crisis, and further established by the Committee’s recent impeachment proceedings.

Following the conclusion of the investigation and those proceedings, House Republicans across the board are voicing their support for Secretary Mayorkas’ impeachment. Below are just some of the statements from the conference in the past few days:

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA)January 31, 2024: Since the moment he was confirmed, Secretary Mayorkas has willfully and consistently refused to comply with federal immigration laws, fueling the worst border catastrophe in American history. He has undermined public trust through multiple false statements to Congress, obstructed lawful oversight of the Department of Homeland Security, and violated his oath of office.

“I commend the House Homeland Security Committee for conducting a thorough and exhaustive investigation into Secretary Mayorkas failed leadership of the department and his role in the ongoing border crisis. Today’s vote in the committee is a solemn, but necessary step to bring accountability for the American communities devastated by the effects of an open border.”

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA), January 31, 2024: “John Adams famously said, ‘Facts are stubborn things,’ and these are the facts, and you can’t look away. This is only part of why Chairman Green and the House Homeland Security Committee marked up articles of impeachment last night. They wrapped that up at about 1:15 this morning and they did very important work for our country, and we will be moving forward swiftly on those articles.”

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA), January 30, 2024: “The Secretary of Homeland Security is the person in charge of the border. He can secure the border today. He’s chosen not to, and that’s a failure of his job. That’s why he is facing impeachment proceedings today. By the way, he has had months—months—to get this right. He’s chosen not to. So, he’s brought it upon himself.”

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN)January 30, 2024: “It’s been a year-long process, very thoughtful and detailed. You’ve got the head of Homeland Security who is charged legally with securing our southern border, and he’s not only failed to do that, he’s willfully disobeyed existing law…The process is moving forward and I expect the articles will pass out of committee and then we’ll pass it off the floor.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN)January 30, 2024: “After nearly a year-long investigation carried out by @HomelandGOP into the border crisis, a few things have become clear: The border crisis is intentional. Secretary Mayorkas is responsible. He must be held accountable… It’s time to impeach.”

House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY)January 31, 2024: “I strongly support @HomelandGOP Chairman @RepMarkGreen and the Homeland Security Committee Republicans for voting to move forward with impeaching DHS Secretary Mayorkas. This important step to hold Joe Biden & Secretary Mayorkas accountable for willfully and systemically refusing to comply with federal immigration laws and acting in a manner subversive of the rule of law and creating the most pressing humanitarian, national security, and homeland crisis in our nation’s history.”

House Committee on Education and the Workforce Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC),January 30, 2024: “If we turn a blind eye when a Cabinet secretary refuses to comply with the law, then we aren’t doing our duty as members of Congress. That is why we are calling for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to be removed from office. The House must vote to impeach him.”

House Committee on Foreign Affairs Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX)January 31, 2024: “By refusing to enforce the law, Sec. Mayorkas has created a disaster that is destroying the fabric of our nation. Since he continues to neglect his Constitutional duties, @HomelandGOP & I are fulfilling ours by voting to remove him from office.”Representative Cliff Bentz (R-OR)January 31, 2024: “It has correctly been said that the object of the House in an impeachment proceeding is to create a full record upon which a verdict in the Senate can be fairly and efficiently judged. Thanks to Chairman Mark Green’s excellent work, this is exactly what has happened. Over the past 10 months, including important recent evidentiary hearings, Chairman Green’s Homeland Security Committee, using an open and deliberative process, has carefully created a full record reflecting Secretary Mayorkas’ violation of statutory and constitutional standards, upon which the Senate can and should deliberate. That process has not only developed the facts and evidence of breaches of our laws, it has also allowed full debate and full disclosure to our nation of what our law requires and the Secretary’s intentional circumvention of those laws.”

Representative Don Bacon (R-NE)January 30, 2024: “There’s laws that have not been complied with and we’re suffering one of the worst crises in our country.”

Representative Carlos Gimenez (R-FL), January 31, 2024: “Congress must hold Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas accountable. Pass it on.”

Representative Dan Bishop (R-NC), January 30, 2024: “The law is clear – the executive branch has to detain and remove illegal immigrants as specified by Congress. Mayorkas has flagrantly and repeatedly violated those laws. The remedy? Congress MUST impeach.”

Representative August Pfluger (R-TX)January 29, 2024: “I am proudly supporting @HomelandGOP’s Articles of Impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas: 1. Willful and Systemic Refusal to Comply with the Law 2. Breach of Public Trust. These articles are serious and thoughtful – and explicably provable. I will vote to impeach.”

Representative Anthony D’Esposito (R-NY), January 30, 2024: “The chaos unleashed by @SecMayorkas border policies has spread throughout the USA, whether in the form of the fentanyl crisis, rising crime or massive strain on schools, public safety & other services. Today, @HomelandGOP will hold him accountable. Time to impeach.”

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), January 30, 2024: “Congress has a responsibility to hold the executive branch accountable when they fail to uphold their oath of office, abuse their authority, or are dishonest with the American people. Secretary Mayorkas refuses to enforce our immigration laws. He has failed in his duty and abused his power. Impeachment and removal is necessary to protect our border and citizens.”

Representative Nick LaLota (R-NY), January 30, 2024: “Secretary Mayorkas has breached the public trust by willfully and systematically refusing to enforce our border security laws. #BorderSecurity”

Representative Laurel Lee (R-FL)January 30, 2024: “Secretary Mayorkas has blatantly defied the law, putting our national security at risk. That is why we have brought articles of impeachment forward to provide accountability.”

Representative Josh Brecheen (R-OK), January 30, 2024: “Impeaching Secretary Mayorkas is not about policy differences or politics. It is about the rule of law. Nobody is above congressional statute or our Constitution. Mayorkas must go.”

Representative Claudia Tenney (R-NY), January 31, 2024: “Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has FAILED to defend our borders and uphold our rule of law. Last night, @HomelandGOP passed articles of impeachment against Mayorkas. I will be voting to impeach him…”

Representative Brian Mast (R-FL)January 30, 2024: “Secretary Mayorkas’ job is to secure the border. Not only is he horrible at his job, he is willfully refusing to do it. It’s abundantly clear that he has abandoned the trust of the American people. It’s time to impeach him.”

Representative Greg Steube (R-FL)January 31, 2024: “It’s time to put the safety of our citizens first and hold Mayorkas accountable for failing to enforce our immigration laws. Impeach him NOW.”

Representative Mary Miller (R-IL), February 1, 2024: “I look forward to voting to IMPEACH Secretary Mayorkas!”
