Katko, McCaul, Rogers: Homeland Is Less Secure With Terrorist Safe Havens Abroad

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Rep. John Katko (R-NY), Republican Leader of the House Committee on Homeland Security, Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX), Republican Leader of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL), Republican Leader of the House Committee on Armed Services issued the following statement on the threat that the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan will have on U.S. homeland security.

“After the devastation of the September 11th attacks on the United States of America, the words ‘Never Forget’ rang out as a somber reminder of the fragility of our security and a commitment to always honor those lives lost. However, as we prepare to remember the 20th anniversary of the attacks that shook our nation, President Biden’s rushed and thoughtless withdrawal from Afghanistan has placed the safety and security of our nation in a precarious position. He is handing over an entire country to terrorists who have outwardly called for violent attacks against the United States and the American people.

“History reminds us that our homeland is less secure when the United States allows for the creation of terrorist safe havens abroad. In the not so distant past, Islamist terrorist-inspired attacks and plots on our homeland were happening with alarming frequency. As we have seen over and over again, the stability of the region can have a direct and grave impact on our homeland security. We urge President Biden to remain vigilant about the threats facing our country at home and abroad and stop putting politics ahead of our homeland and national security. President Biden’s disastrous foreign policy has real-world consequences and in this case, those are a less safe homeland and the loss of numerous innocent Afghan lives.”
