Katko Statement on Pipeline Security

WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. John Katko (R-NY), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, issued the following statement on the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) Security Directive for the pipeline industry:

“TSA requiring the pipeline industry to immediately report cyber incidents is imperative to securing a key element of our country’s critical infrastructure. The TSA directive is an important step forward in strengthening TSA and CISA’s ability to respond to these rapidly evolving cyber threats. Now is not the time for turf battles. It’s vital that TSA focus its resources and oversight on securing the nation’s 2.7 million miles of pipelines.

“As we saw with the ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline, the Department of Homeland Security must immediately be made aware of cyber attacks in order to alert other stakeholders and ensure best practices are being followed throughout all Sector Risk Management Agencies. I encourage TSA and CISA to involve industry in the implementation of the directive and as the Department continues its full court press on critical infrastructure resilience efforts.”
