“Startling Stats 8.0” Show No “Predictable Seasonal Drop” in Biden’s Border Crisis

WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. John Katko (R-NY), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, released the latest edition of Homeland Republicans’ “Startling Stats” fact sheet, demonstrating President Biden’s border crisis is evolving into a growing humanitarian crisis as thousands of migrants continue to make the dangerous journey in severe conditions.

The fact sheet highlights the newly released Customs & Border Protection’s (CBP) operational statistics for June 2021 showing that the Biden Administration continues to break records with its reckless and dangerous border security policies. Border crossings this year have reached over 1.1 million illegal crossings along the southwest border – up 362% from the same time frame last year. The crisis at the border is not improving. In fact, it’s getting worse.

       

These startling numbers come on the heels of reports the Biden Administration is looking to eliminate Title 42 authority, which allows U.S. border officials to quickly turn back migrants due to the danger posed by communicable diseases. South America is increasingly becoming the epicenter of COVID-19. Not only are migrants arriving at the southern border from places around the world that are battling rampant COVID-19 infection rates, but they are traveling through high-risk South and Central American countries en route to the border.

With the U.S. moving steadily toward a post-pandemic recovery, now is not the time to end the use of Title 42. As powerful variants continue to spread around the world, preserving COVID-19 pandemic recovery in the U.S. is exactly why it’s now so important to keep Title 42.
