Rogers Statement on Immigration Agreement with Mexico

WASHINGTON – Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.), ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, today released a statement following the announcement that Mexico has agreed to take action to secure its borders and reduce illegal immigration into the United States.

“President Trump’s announcement that Mexico will do more to stem the flow of illegal immigration to our southwest border is welcome news. This agreement shows that Mexico not only understands its role in the crisis at the border, but that it’s willing to take concrete steps to address it. It’s now time for Democrats in Congress to do the same.

“Republicans have pushed to provide emergency funding for humanitarian and law enforcement border missions at every opportunity. Democrats have so far chosen political finger-pointing over solutions, at the expense of migrants and national security. It’s time for Democrats to put their feelings about the president aside and pass this badly needed funding – migrant lives are at stake.”

Background: Rogers introduced H.R. 3056, the Border Crisis Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2019, which would fund the administration’s request for an additional $4.5 billion for humanitarian response and border operations. Democrats refused to consider supplemental funding on the floor twice in the last month.
