Top Homeland Republican Joins Congressional Delegation to Advance U.S. National Security Interests in Region

WASHINGTON – Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.), ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee and senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, traveled to South America last week as part of a Congressional delegation focusing on homeland and national security issues in the region. The delegation was led by House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and traveled to Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia.

“The United States’ partnerships with Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia are critical to combatting terrorism and promoting our shared values like freedom and democracy,” Rogers said. “Furthering our alliances in South America will advance U.S. homeland and national security interests.”

The delegation included:  McCarthy, Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Armed Services Committee Ranking Member Mac Thornberry (R-Texas), Budget Committee Ranking Member Steve Womack (R-Ark.), Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Rep. David Joyce (R-Ohio), Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Texas), Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.), and Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-Pa.).

Rogers visited the Argentina Israelite Mutual Association to pay his respects and lay a wreath in remembrance of the 1994 Hezbollah bombing.

The delegation toured a Colombian naval base and Coast Guard Academy. The group learned about Colombian efforts to stop the flow of illegal drugs and the partnership between U.S. Navy Seals and the Colombian Navy.

Colombian President Iván Duque hosted the delegation where they spoke extensively about Colombia’s progress in countering narcotics and the ongoing crisis in neighboring Venezuela.
