House Clears GOP Homeland Security Bills

WASHINGTON — Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.), ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, today applauded House passage of two Republican-led homeland security bills: Rep. Mark Walker’s (R-N.C.) H.R. 1589, CBRN Intelligence and Information Sharing Act of 2019 and Rep. Michael Guest’s (R-Miss.) H.R. 1590, Terrorist and Foreign Fighter Travel Exercise Act of 2019.

“Strengthening and improving DHS programs is a key priority of Homeland Security Committee Republicans and these bills each make important contributions toward achieving that goal,” Rogers said. “Today’s floor action marks an important step on the way to their passage into law and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to take them up in short order. I commend Reps. Walker and Guest for their continued leadership.”

“Terrorists continue to try to use chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear materials in their attacks on our homeland,” Walker said. “Because some of these materials are readily available, it is critical that we ensure the federal government shares information with our local officials to keep our communities safe. Combatting terrorism, both foreign and domestic takes international, national, and most importantly, local coordination.”

“I cannot stress enough the importance of H.R. 1590,” Guest said. “It represents continued action in combating terrorism and ensuring the safety of our nation. As the threat of terrorism continues to evolve, we must remain vigilant in our resolve to combat our enemies. Our nation’s law enforcement of all jurisdictions, whether it be federal or local, need to have access to the valuable information and resources that this bill would provide, so that our communities can be protected from terrorist activity.”
