Yesterday, Chairman Michael McCaul led a Congressional delegation to Afghanistan to meet with officials and discuss the security status of the country among other issues. He released the following statement regarding his trip.

Chairman McCaul (R-Texas): “Our Congressional delegation traveled to Afghanistan yesterday and met with our men and women in uniform, General Dunford, in charge of NATO forces in Afghanistan, Ambassador Cunningham and senior military and State Department officials.

“We learned the U.S. has supported Afghanistan making significant progress as evidenced by their successful set of recent elections.  Also, Afghan security forces are standing up to the challenges and in many cases operating on their own.

“We know the threats we faced from terrorism on 9/11 still remain and have become more challenging as the threat has evolved at home and abroad.  Our current progress must be bolstered by a bilateral security agreement between our two countries. Afghanistan is still a fragile country which will need our support for years to come.  Most importantly, by being here, I am again reminded of the bravery and sacrifice of our service members and feel honored to be in their presence.”
