WASHINGTON, D.C. – The House Homeland Security Committee, chaired by Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), will hold a full committee hearing entitled “A New Perspective on Threats to the Homeland” tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. in 311 Cannon House Office Building.

The homeland continues to face a multitude of innovative and persistent threats to its security. This hearing will look at the ever-present threats posed to our nation’s borders from drug cartels and terrorist organizations; our infrastructure from cyber attacks; and our citizens from Islamist extremism. Members will examine how the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is combating these threats, as well as the need for a strategy to measure and improve the Department’s success in securing the border.

Chairman McCaul: “Our nation faces myriad homeland security challenges from cyber attacks and international and domestic terrorism to security at our airports. Tomorrow, we will examine how the Committee's agenda will address these challenges including presenting a framework for legislation to gain effective control of our borders. We must compel the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to develop and implement a single national strategy that maps out its use of manpower and resources.

“Unlike recent proposals, this strategy needs to include metrics to measure success based not on resources, but on proven results. DHS can no longer subjectively grade its own work and claim the border is secure. As extremism continues to find international safe havens and terrorists merge with other transnational criminal groups, they will grow stronger and capable of striking our homeland. Our inability to control who enters and who exits our country remains one of our greatest national security risks.”
