Congressional Panel Discussion on Effects of Shutdown on Frontline Homeland Security Personnel
(WASHINGTON) – This Thursday, January 24th, House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) will host a panel discussion on how the partial federal government shutdown is negatively impacting our nation's frontline homeland security personnel and agencies. Former Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh C. Johnson will deliver opening remarks.
For 32 days, the Department of Homeland Security – which includes the Transportation Security Administration, the United States Coast Guard, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, Customs and Border Protection, and many other critical security agencies – has gone unfunded, leaving much of the nation’s frontline security apparatus understaffed and depleted of resources. Thursday’s panel discussion will feature testimony from relevant experts and stakeholders to highlight the detriment of the funding lapse and make the case for immediately re-opening the government.
