Subcommittee Hearing: Eliminating Waste, Fraud, Abuse, and Duplication in the Department of Homeland Security

March 8, 2012 2:00 PM | 311 Cannon House Office Building

NOTE Time Change: This hearing, originally for 10 a.m., has been moved to 9 a.m. on Thursday, March 8, 2012 in 311 Cannon House Office Building

Chairman McCaul on the hearing:

“Last month, Secretary Janet Napolitano testified the President’s fiscal year 2013 budget request reflects DHS’s commitment to use resources efficiently and effectively. However, GAO and the DHS Inspector General continue to find numerous cases of waste, fraud, abuse, and duplication within the Department.  GAO issued a comprehensive report this week listing duplication and cost savings.  For example, some Government agencies are paying DHS’s Federal Protective Service for facility risk assessments that are not being performed, and at the same time conducting their own internal risk assessments.  Likewise, DHS is implementing its Arizona Border Surveillance Technology Plan, however GAO found DHS cannot justify the rationale for specific types of technologies, how much they need, and where to put it. Most American families must make tough choices in this challenging economic environment.  Many have already eliminated waste from their budgets, and now are looking for cost savings.  We expect no less of the Department. The hearing will focus on opportunities to eliminate waste, fraud, abuse, and duplication. Our goal is to help make DHS a stronger organization that is ready to combat the threats we face and maximize increasingly scarce resources.”
