Opioids in the Homeland: DHS Coordination with State and Local Partners to Fight the Epidemic

June 19, 2018 12:30 PM | Room 205 of The Speaker Matthew J. Ryan Legislative Office Building, The Pennsylvania Capitol Complex, N 3rd Street, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

The United States is in the midst of an opioid epidemic. Since 1999, the annual number of overdose deaths due to opioids has more than quadrupled, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The focus of this hearing is to better understand how the Department of Homeland Security is creating a force multiplier to combat the opioid epidemic by partnering with state and local entities. The field hearing will allow Members the opportunity to learn more about opioid pathways into the country and better understand DHS’s coordination with non-federal partners to fight against the opioid crisis.
