Subcommittee Chairman Peter King (R-NY) on the hearing: “The Caucasus are a volatile region home to extremist networks and individuals who have reportedly joined al Qaeda's global jihadist movement. Militants from that region have fought US forces in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and have senior positions with terrorist organizations in Syria, such as al Nusra front and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Terrorists in this region have also inspired an attack against the Homeland carried out during the Boston Marathon last year. This hearing will explore the threat that these groups pose both inside and outside of the region, as well as examine the potential threat these networks may eventually pose to United States interests.”
